THE KOWLOON WALLED CITY PARK |
|
Kowloon Walled City was a densely populated, largely ungoverned settlement in Kowloon. Originally a Chinese military fort, the Walled City became an enclave after the New Territories were leased to Britain in 1898. Its population increased dramatically following the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. In 1987, the Walled City contained 33,000 residents within its 6.5-acre (0.03 km2; 0.01 sq mi) borders. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it was controlled by Triads and had high rates of prostitution, gambling and drug use.
In January 1987, the Hong Kong government announced plans to demolish the Walled City. After an arduous eviction process, demolition began in March 1993 and was completed in April 1994. Kowloon Walled City Park opened in December 1995 and occupies the area of the former Walled City. Some historical artifacts from the Walled City, including its Yamen building and remnants of its South Gate, have been preserved there.
Today, the park occupies one of the most historic sites in the territory. The design of the park was inspired by the Jiangnan garden style of the early Qing Dynasty. Construction began in May 1994, with a work-force of skilled artisans from the Mainland being employed to ensure accurate reproduction of the classical concept. It was built at a cost of $76 million and is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The park is now a tranquil and beautiful attraction but was once where the airplanes used to roar overhead with their landing gears lowered, just before landing at the KaiTak Airport runway close by. |

The Jade Market in Yau Ma Tei was set up in 1984. It is a great place to buy jade ware at attractive prices as souvenirs. The market comprises the eastern and western sites, two adjoining sites with about 340 and 100 stalls respectively. All sorts of jade ware are on sale, with prices ranging from a few dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars. The market attracts both locals and tourists.
At the western side of the market, there are letter-writers offering a wide range of services, including Chinese calligraphy, letter-writing in English or Chinese, and completion of application forms and tax returns. These stall operators are among the few remaining from this ancient trade. |

This tour mainly visits attractions on the Northern side of the island, the main CBD (central business district). Start the tour by riding the iconic "Star Ferry", which was the main form of transportation for crossing the harbor over a century ago. The tour then passes through the bustling Central business district with its luxury offices and skyscrapers. Next, it's up the longest outdoor escalator in Hong Kong as we pass by some of the hippest nightlife districts (but in the day time) to visit the oldest temple in Hong Kong Island in an area renowned as the "mid-levels" with the densest population of millionaires living side-by-side to each other. On the way back down, the tour visits "Cat Street" and "Hollywood Road" which is known for its antiques, curio shops and trendy café and nightlife. |

The Star Ferry traces its origins to 1880 and was founded by a Parsee cook, who began a ferry service across Victoria Harbour with his steamboat, "Morning Star". You simply haven't experienced Hong Kong if you haven't experienced the Star Ferry yet! |
